Written Request
A handful gesture given by a girl. Eyes lighting up like Christmas lights. She looks beyond the class to a new adventure. A hand that wants to reach the sky but won’t be allowed to. Speech comes out of the mouth yet nobody can understand it. Parents that realize the potential of their child from an early age. A handful of remarks about a girl who could not reply… is this dignified? A world smitten by it’s own language that could not realize mine. A written request from her teacher takes her places. Her teacher has tears in his eyes at the departure time. This is your piece of paper for a new beginning in life. Remember my words my child. Sign of a word given of appreciation by her to the teacher. “I want to achieve what these children are,” she says in the class. A shocked teacher looks at the ceiling— can this ever be true? Whispers in the ears… does she belong here, for heaven’s sake? (Thoughtful poem) (taken from my book called shock)
