A-Night-Before-Christmas
All filled with tinsel and gifts And shoppers prepared with their holiday lists; Big trees fill our homes and lights glow from our roofs Each child tucked in bed listening for eight tiny hoofs; Parents scurry about to make things just right Because Santa will be here for its Christmas Eve night; We’ve maxed out our cards and shopped ‘til we dropped We fought through the crowd for the last toy in stock; Each year that passes, we swear to no more Now the night before Christmas and we’ve cleaned out the stores; All the gifts are wrapped with pretty bows and paper We must enjoy it now because we’ll pay for it later; We listen to choirs and sing jingle bells We even toss coins into little red pails; We quickly pass Angels attached to the trees For we forget about others who truly have needs; It’s Santa with his bag of toys and his magical sleigh Frosty the Snowman sings, dances and plays; For Jack Frost and the Grinch are kin no doubt On Dasher and Dancer the ole’ man shouts; These stories are familiar and very well known But we forget the one of the King on the throne; This stress of the season it all starts to build And then we remember a story in a field; There were Angels, stars, shepherds and sheep They stood in such awe and spoke not a peep; They followed a star to a far away land With no more than themselves and a staff in their hand; The journey was long but there was no anger No traffic or malls just a small little manger; No stockings were hung, no gifts or trees Only Mary and Joseph who bowed on their knees; When the shepherds arrived, they met a beautiful sight The baby who was born on that bright, starry night; No Rudolph, Santa or the man made of snow Only the new baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes; For this is God’s gift that can’t be bought with a price Even Jesus himself had to pay with his life; Though we charged up the bill, he paid the debt meant for us And we thank him by changing his name to an “X” with a “mas”; Christmas is no more about Christ and his birth It’s all about gifts and what we can charge ‘til it hurts; We’ve no time for the truth, only fairytale plays; About eight tiny reindeer and a man with a sleigh It’s not Christmas in December on the 25th It’s a “holiday” for all those who want to forget; For twas the night before Christmas and you should ask yourself this, have I included Christ on my list.
