Over the Mountain
A winter vacation to Grandpa’s farm Involved a drive over the Great Divide As long as we didn’t hit a bad storm I can make it in three days, if I try I know now, it would be better to fly Than to chance the weather by driving there Anyway, the trip started without a care Then came the day to cross the Divide Got part way, up when the weather turned bad But we were committed, nowhere to hide Car slipped, kids asked, “are we OK Dad?” Made the summit and felt better a tad As we started down, the car lost traction Turned the wheel, a knee jerk reaction Things went from bad to worse in a hurry I had lost control on a mountain pass And could hardly see through the snow flurry The car was fishing tailing, I gave it gas Scary as hell, but gained control at last It was strangely quiet for a shot time Frightened to death but then all was fine On the trip back, the weather was OK We got to where the car fish tailed and stopped It scared all of us once more on that day Seeing the cliff where the car could have dropped I still think about how we could have flopped Made myself a promise that’s sure to last No winter driving on a mountain pass Charles Sides Rhyme Royal Poetry Contest
