Staring Into the Mist
At dawn in the misty silence I saw before me spread Hundreds of ghostly tombstones marking out the dead Here beneath the sodden earth they lay in eternal sleep This is a place of sorrow where those who come here weep This is a place of silence the silence of the dead This is where hearts are broken, this is where tears are shed Row upon row the tombstones carved by a mason's hand Speak of the pain and heartache none of us understand A tiny spot on the planet that friends or loved ones tend Regardless of fame and fortune here’s where we meet our end No greed or ambition is present, no one’s aware of your worth All of mankind is equal when laid to rest under the earth. Ignoring age or gender immune to religious belief The grim reaper takes his quota leaving us only grief A chilling question crossed my mind as I slowly turned to go Who will be next to be planted at the end of the latest row? The mist had began to thicken, as rain began to fall As I left this place I wondered why are we here at all? Why should we all end like this?, why was it all begun? Blindly I stared into the mist, for answers I had none
