Meeting Expectations
Mamma praised her Johnny well For every word he learned to spell. She taught him to use the dictionary For each one he found contrary. Sally’s parents showed displeasure, Gave her a slap just for good measure, When she failed to get an A or B In Arithmetic or Geometry. Wanting to make his mamma proud, John studied and read his words aloud. He learned to spell so speedily That he won every spelling bee. Sally’s father sneered and said, “You can’t get ‘nuthin’ through that head”. Sally could only sit and cry And decide there was no use to try. John now has met his every goal. Sally is pregnant and on the dole. I can say without any hesitations, They both have met their expectations. For Paula's contest). (From comments I have received some readers are commenting that this is not always the result of how a child is raised. I never intended to say that it was. I was following the request of the contest and John's parents got the result they fully expected. They could have been disappointed but weren't. Sally's folks got what they were expecting. She could have risen above it but didn't. I am sorry about that. Joyce)
