I Helped
It was just after Thanksgiving. The Holidays were upon us. Time for me to go out on my annual mission. Sometimes it's rewarding, sometimes it's tough. I went into a pub I had never been to before. Here's where many a times in the past I would score. A handful of patrons, about five including me, plus the bartender and not hard on the eyes at all was she. She asked what I'd have. I responded, "A beer and buy everyone a round, you too my dear." They all thanked me, except for one. He was somewhere else, damaged, undone. I could tell by that familiar million mile stare that he displayed uncontrollably to all who were there. The bartender leaned over exposing her cleavage to him "Sir, the next drink you have is on that gentleman." We got to talking and I came to learn sadly that his wife just died giving birth to twins tragically, and in addition to these two new borns he also had a son and daughter who would also mourn the death of the mother the twins would never know. I've found someone worthy. On with the show. Now all I have to do is get this stranger's full name and home address. A talent that yours truly has been so deceitfully blessed. I lied and told him that I was an over the road trailer driver and that spending time with my loved ones during the Holidays rarely occurs, but one thing that always uplifts me is that no matter what state I'm in on December 25th, I mail all my cards to my friends and family. I then looked him in the eye and said, "I realize that I just met you but I'd be honored to put you on my Holiday card list too," and then this stranger whom I never met before proceeded to write down his name, home address and even more. "I imagine it must get lonely being on the road so frequently. I included my phone # as well. If you ever need to talk, feel free to call me," said he. I wished all Holiday good wishes and made my not so graceful exit. I then acquired a $25,000.00 certified check at my bank where it was on deposit. I made it payable to the poor stranger at the pub lost in his grief. It won't bring back his wife, but perhaps it will provide him with some grief relief. Senders Name: Santa Claus and The North Pole the address of the sendee is how I filled out the check. He'll never know it was from me. The return address on the mailing envelope is the same as the one he gave me. and with postage affixed, I mailed his Holiday gift from me anonymously.
