When Life Was Special
Sounds and smells are all around us each day. We can't stop the nerves from sensing even when it brings us sadness. The smell of buttermilk reminds me of my grandmother's biscuits. She made the best biscuits and didn't mind sharing with a little fat girl. She was always glad to see me and pleased to see me eat. Every time I smell listerine I think of my other Mawmaw. She kissed me goodnight after rinsing her mouth. I was glad to stay with them and be loved. My Bigdaddy was the smell of fertilizer, burlap sacks and earth all roll into one. He was a farmer and loved to see the vegetables grow. When I hear an old truck or tractor make a pupupupu sound my heart leaps for joy that meant he was on his way to our house on his old john deere. Ninow was a particular after shave lotion; I never new the brand but I'll know it when I smell it. He also loved to eat soft peppermint candy and usually had that smell in his pocket. He had a loud jovial laugh only a Morgan can know. Have not heard it since his death; he was the last of his family. Sounds and smells bring back memories and we can't stop the flashbacks. Just enjoy the memories and the good feelings of childhood once again.
