In Dreams
Tonight I spent alone, I listened to the beat of my own city, and for once I did find it pretty. The corner store that sold illegal drugs, below balconies near worn out rugs. Children on the block played until eight, leaving school books by the gate. Factory workers drinking ale near a fence, a homeless man picking up a few cents. The little boutique had a clearance sale, the postman brought up some mail. A crow cawed loudly on a window sill, I could hear steaks sizzling on the grill. Even a couple had plans of their own, a tall handsome man with pungent cologne. The neighbors above had invited guests, the laughing assured me of their success, And there I was in all of this noise. Not having fun with the girls or the boys. Not drinking ale with those chuckling men, Not grilling steaks over at Janey's and Glenn, Not out shopping for some nice new clothes, Not leaving anywhere to see any shows, Not even spending some time with a friend, I turned to my bed and welcomed the end.
