Surprise !
One day when it was wet and grey I filled a form and sent away Exotic mix the order said To brighten any garden bed I wrote a cheque, a large amount It left a hole on my account But John will get a nice surprise When my exotics win a prize At their arrival, on due date To plant them out I couldn’t wait Prepared the plot and fed the soil I didn’t want these bulbs to spoil I planted deep and planted wide I used a ruler for my guide I took great care and watered well I wonder if they’ll have a smell. Away from home, a week or two A friend of mine was feeling blue When I returned, there by the gate Stood husband John in merry state And spread before my startled eyes To MY amazement, MY surprise Arrayed within my perfect beds A thousand nodding snowdrop heads What happened to my brilliant show? Where did my bright exotics go? Did someone cheat me, playing tricks And swap these snowdrops for my mix? But as I pondered on my plight I felt a dawning of delight I knew this trick was meant to be And God was smiling down at me Contest ‘In search of the human mind’ by A Rambling Poet My assignment--- SURPRISE!
