Hanging From the Ceiling
I went to visit a very dear friend well advanced in age Confined now to a nursing home as time just slipped away For many years she lived next door I would visit her house each day The kindness that she showed to me could never be repaid I walked into her tiny room and what a sight to see Letters and pictures everywhere, several gifts from me Confined to the bed she looked my way I could tell how she was feeling As she pointed to the many gifts all hanging from the ceiling We sat and talked most of the day her heart was filled with joy Reminiscing on good times that we had when I was just a boy Deep in her eyes she hid the pain of age and loneliness Despite my efforts I knew deep down I could repay her kindness As the day went on and darkness fell she seemed so very sad She knew my departure was very close being lonely all she had I went to get some food and drink to boost her thoughts and feelings And when I got back to her room she was hanging from the ceiling Despite the efforts of the staff that day she could not be revived Now a room full of the life she lived was all that was left behind It pained my heart deep down to know her life had come to this She died alone in a dreary room she thought she would not be missed I wish that I could have done much more than visit now and then So she would know I loved her so for the person she was back when I knew this visit would be my last for inside I had a feeling I would come back to find her now at rest hanging from the ceiling
