She Wore Combat Boots!
Wasn't that long ago that she attended the high school prom, Wearing a frilly gown sewn by her very talented Mom! She shed her jeans to wear a tailored suit of Army green, And a jaunty black beret - My! She did look keen! She spurned scholarships believing it her obligation, To emulate her Dad and Grandpa who had served their nation. She mastered basic training with other bewildered recruits, Wearing battle dress uniforms and sturdy combat boots! She marched with her comrades beneath the blistering sun, Toting her fifty pound pack, helmet and trusty gun. She excelled as a soldier and was named "Soldier of the Year!" She loved the Army and considered making it her career. When others became dispirited she was their inspiration, Urging them to, "Press On! Press On!" with determination. Her captain readily saw that she served with devotion. He boosted her to sergeant, a well-deserved promotion! When in the heat of battle midst falling rocket and bomb, She encouraged fellow warriors with resolute aplomb. As time passed on she produced her own little recruits, Who were proud to proclaim, "My Mommie wore combat boots!" Robert L. Hinshaw, CMSgt, USAF, Retired (© All Rights Reserved)
