Ancient Lore
I recall a legend once told of rebel in the Civil War. I was just only four years old when mother portrayed ancient lore. The man was a prisoner escapee hiding from a Union patrol. From a prison camp he did flee to save his Confederate soul. Convicted and found to have spied chose our quaint farmhouse for his perch. In the dark north room he did hide from Union troops on a man search. In the huge closet he wished to perish by a noose made from a rope sash. A harsh prison camp he did not cherish and he had no will to be brash. His dead corpse was never buried but left hanging from rafter high. His old bones years later were carried to a relic graveyard nearby. The cold north room was never used by our immediate household. Visitors did not seem amused when tall tales started to unfold. Round about mid-night we could hear heavy boots coming up the stairs. No doubt it put us all in fear even raised some very fast prayers. The apparition never revealed nor did he anytime relate. We just kept the cold north room sealed and sold our delightful estate. Copyright © 2009 By Caryl S. Muzzey
