THE JOY OF EING AN EARLY RISER
I’ve always been an early riser…for as long as I can remember… (I wonder if I’ve been overcorrecting for being born on the last day of December?) Bur for whatever reason…whatever conclusions can be drawn… I’ve always been one of those people who wakes up before the dawn. In the mountains it’s a wonderful time to wake up…overlooking our back yard because sitting there I become a witness to the changing of the guard. I get to watch the sky as it transforms from ebony to grey… then slowly into blue as night gives way to day. One of the things I love the most…as a new day’s about to begin is watching the animals of the night clock out while the animals of the day clock in. There is a moment between night and day…while darkness still blankets the sky when I am blessed to watch the last flickers of those nocturnal fireflies… Still hoping there’s time to find a mate they flash without making a sound before they finally give up the chase and find their respite on the ground. And as the morning eases in and more light occupies the sky If I look quickly I can see a few late bats flutter by. They’ve spent the evening making sure the inset population is reduced and I get the last glimpse of them as they come home to roost. Before I know it the night has left and the new day is beginning… because the trees and mountains are lit up and the morning birds are singing. I love that I get to greet the new day with my ears and with my eyes the same time I get to say goodnight to the bats and fireflies. This all happens fairly quickly…just leaving me time enough reminisce and wonder if I wasn’t an early riser…about all the things that I would miss.
