Springtime and The Fall
Springtime and The Fall Spring is most certainly an uplifting time, All around Life growing With infectious enthusiasm, But lately I’ve been feeling mine Beginning to unravel. I knew it would come eventually But now I’ve reached the point Where I could care less About what I have done Or who I have become Simply because it is all Just so many layers, Built up, but now being shed. Maybe “care less” is too flippant Since I care enough to write this. So instead, let me say, I doubt the importance and even reality Of what I have done and become And yet am intrigued by what is now. It’s a feeling of leaves falling After a long life of strong healthy growth And a brief few weeks of glorious color, Leaves falling to reveal a bare frame With which to face The even harsher winds to come. It’s a feeling in the muscles and joints and bones Of never quite being right Not from illness, but simply worn-outness. And it’s a feeling deep in the heart With associated doubt Of which is the cause or the effect. It’s another spring Perhaps even more beautiful Than any I can recall, Yet here I am unraveling at my core Preparing for the inevitable winter That awaits us all. (5/8/25)
