Meet her! Please” I plead You search my face and take my hand, and worrisome appear “My dear,” you tell me, cruel, “there is a spell upon your ears!” I reach my ears and feel no spell but feel it in my eyes Leaned above the well, I see a violet gleam, and look to you I say what do I do?, but my mouth cries “Meet her, please!” Your arm betwixt my hands affix’d, I drag you back Your arm it rips at steely grip and I cry Feet, please no! Fumbling in your pocket, you strain against my hand Withdraw a leaf, pearlescent green, with periwinkle veins, Begin to whisper in its ear, though since when leafs had ears I do not know But the leaf, it seems to hear I watch you see her standing there, at the flagstones of your house And see the way her dappled wings pull a frown upon your mouth Her mouth opens, but your fingers faster, and the leaf it zzzip!s away The point of the leaf meets the tip of her nose and pop! She is no more Sore fingers fall from your aching arm, “Sorry!” I yelp, and mean it, too A moment slips between us, your look upon my ears “Friend?” I say, “Who was she, dear?” Satisfied, you look away “Purple dreams in other realms, they’ve come to haunt me so” When stars went up at dusk, you danced, a circle ‘round your house A stick you drug upon the ground, and sounds fell from your mouth You did not want her back again, that much I did know, so you danced all night around your house And the mushrooms, they did grow
