The Other Side of Silence
I had a love once, A boy with eyes like a fresh dark roast, Undiluted with milk and full of innocence. I remember that first hug – full of warmth, a sign to go on. I remember that first call from 7 seas away. The times I felt no hunger, the times I felt shame and weakness. He was my biggest support – my anchor in the ship sailing through life's turbulent seas, And I his, when the weakness struck, a hit from an unexpected corner. A pillar of strength for each other – when one pillar shook, the other held strong. But then came the day – when both pillars cracked, both on the verge of collapse. “What now?” one may wonder. She wonders too. Her anchor flew away, and that boy lies under the stones of his own building, Stones that make Atlas’s efforts seem frail yet Atlas could stand under his burden. She wonders if he can stand under his too. It is two more months till the world is lifted off his shoulders, a year left to get freedom. And she wonders if it will last-if he can make it. Hope flew out of Pandora’s box, those eyes hide shadows. The window looks bleak with shutters now – it no longer reminds me of sunshine. But of the ghosts that haunt this maze we are in, This maze called life or would one call it a river? An unstoppable force, one that shatters all in its path. The stones, one would call strong, but before the river they fall and shatter. She knows he is strong, yet the hammering river against him takes his breath. And with his breath, he takes hers as well. The sundial counts time moves towards shadows. The garden once filled with life and hope now fades into the darkness The very life that drew them to this sacred place is starting to die and wither. The pain continues, it grows, ebbs and flows over both of them. Each trapped in their own hell. One with the burdens of the world and the other with empathy. Sometimes she wonders if searching for the sunlight again does more good, Or if all she does is cause pain. The memory of that first hug, fading into a mist. It scares her to leave the space where he was her everything. To not know if she is making a difference or if he remembers. She wants it to be a dream, after all, dreams only exist at night. Daylight brings with it the sounds of new hope and sunlight bright. Was it all a dream, or was any of it real? The suspense, the wait to see if the Fates demand his life and hers, awaits. It seems almost like a game for the Gods, One on a board where they are pawns – helpless and waiting forever.
