The world slips into sleep, and I lie awake, restless on the cold bed
The world slips into sleep, and I lie awake, restless on the cold bed, Waiting for that call to bring me comfort, like every night, The day's fatigue lingers, but the night comes to share everything with him, To listen as his stories come to life and unfold in the dark, The night passes in a haze, and our words seem to stretch beyond, We fall asleep to the rhythm of our breaths, eagerly awaiting the next night, For another heartfelt conversation, another whispered kiss through the old phone. A buzz, a light, and I turn—drawn into the present by the phone’s light, My heart flutters at the glow of his name, and my eyes shine with longing, My hands no longer wait, they grab it eagerly, with sincere excitement. "We need to talk," he says, his words simple, yet heavy like lead, The curve of my lips fades, falling under their silent, weighty burden, My fingers grip the phone tighter, desperate to hold onto something real, My heart skips, as anticipation fills the air around me, "Of course," I hear my voice, trying to stay calm in the face of the storm. "I don’t think it’s working anymore. This distance costs us too much and hurts, I thought we were stronger, but I’m sorry, I can’t continue," He speaks, and I freeze, my mind trying to grasp the meaning of his words, My throat dries, and the air suddenly becomes heavy, as if I can’t breathe, Words remain somewhere between my chest and lips, my eyes blur with tears, My fingers tremble, losing their grip, and my back hits the wall. "Are you there?" he asks, and I hang up without a word, it’s just me and the night, Yes, I’m here, this night longer than any other, just silence, No conversations, only the wails haunting the silence of the empty room, I fall back onto the bed, letting the weight of the moment engulf me in darkness, My pillow wet with silent tears, "Where did I go wrong?" my heart asks, I search deeply for answers, for I have the whole night ahead to find them, While the world slips into sleep, I lie awake, desolate on the cold bed.
