If we’d left a pilchard and brought just one third, It still would be bigger than this little bird.” “Okay,” said Rum as he focused his stare, “Go get me that little red worm over there.” Raisin looked over and said with a squirm, “I’m not gonna feed him a slippery worm.” Rum said, “This little chap’s hungry and cold, He needs to eat something before he gets old.” Raisin said, “You seem to think you’re the boss, So figure it out because I’m at a loss.” Rum said, “The budgie is sat on his swing. Go in and see what he might let you bring.” So Raisin nipped back through the cat-flap and then In just a few moments she came back again “I asked Pretty Boy what a chick would find yummy. He gave me some millet for his empty tummy.” They put down the millet for their hungry chick And boy was he hungry; he ate it up quick. When he was finished, Rum said, “What’s your name?” But the bird didn’t answer which seemed quite a shame. Raisin said, “That’s about right for a bird. Most of them don’t know a single cat word.” But then the bird flapped and he gave them a tweet And he and the kittens made friends in the street. Each day the bird ate the millet they’d bring And as he grew stronger he started to sing Both Rum and Raisin could only speak Cat And gradually Little Bird learned some of that His wings became strong so he could fly away But Little Bird still came to play every day One day they played in; it was pouring with rain The kitten’s mum said, “Oh, are you back again? I’m clean out of millet… will bread do for now?” She got quite a shock when the bird said, “Meow!”
