The Snowy Climb
I remember her quite clearly As if only yesterday, In my mind I loved her dearly But she was miles and miles away. Up there above the tree line Where only pure beauty can go, And no one like me could ever be Beside her in the snow. Where she walked with grace upon her face As if smitten by God himself, A living, breathing, beatific being Needing no one like me for help. Or meant for one so near to none As invisibility could attain, While she walked on air with angelic flair And never knew my name. Until one day it happened After years past, by and by, Our apogees turned to perigee And she returned before my eyes. Once again, out in the wind Near those snowy mountain peaks, And I finally found the courage to ask, “Do you even remember me?” And her smile turned into something I’d never seen before, As if stretching out in all directions From shore to shore and more. Her reply was, “I remember well Those days you gazed at me, And waited long and longer still For you to set me free.” “But I never dreamed,” came my response “And never ever knew, That a man like me could ever be In love with a girl like you.” And then we stood for a moment in silence An eternity in space, Each gazing in the other’s eyes, Mesmerized in place. Until we parted once again But differently this time, She headed toward the valley wide And I began the snowy climb. © Terrell Martin, 01/26/2025
