In the Stillness of the Night
Loneliness seems to hit hardest, In the stillness of the night, When silence surrounds me, Before the darkness turns to light. In the hours when I toss and turn, And sleeplessness seems to go on, When counting sheep doesn’t work, It sometimes feels as if I can’t go on. I’ve never gotten used to, That empty spot in my bed, Where someone I once loved, Nightly rested his head. It seems the nights are longer, Than the hours in the day, Because there’s nobody to share with, And no way to get away. In the daytime there is much to do, It’s easy to get out, To get away and not dwell, On the many thoughts that come out. At night I’m faced with my thoughts, As I lay alone in the dark, Trying to rest my mind, And not let life’s events leave a mark. If only the night time weren’t so long, If only there was a way, To truly get used to, Living single every day. Through prayer and scripture study, Each day I gain more strength, To deal with this season of singleness, To accept it, no matter its length.
