A Famine A Nation Starved
If I could have chose to love another, And the heavens had fallen from the sky, And the fields which offer little or no hope, Would I have chosen another love, or die? If the ravages within man's hearts desire, Were to stay amidst these fields of shame, To plead for clemency and the lords mercy, While your wind rapes me of my name. If the cold and hunger do not bury me, And the skies in shame close their eyes, And the walking dead should sit awhile, Under the banner of now angled skies. If the seed of man's own, betrays his heart, And whispers softly caressing his dreams, That man should perish for the want or need, While listening to another man's screams. If the devil conspires to take each loved soul, And the land has taken three million more, And the lifeblood that would sustain a nation, Leaves our homeland for different shores. If seven years has not broken our celtic spirits, We will hunger not in heart, for several more, Left to die by roadsides turfed from our doors, Houses torn asunder in God's name what for ? If the heart is not fed, like the flesh it surely dies, As the cold of 47 would bring a tear to a dead mans eye, The ditches and fields filled with love and despair, As many families starved in silence, left to die. No mans possesions could be protected, From the flesh eating that once occured, The salty tears starved of their humanity, Where all life's meaning had been blurred. If God's voice has turned and walked out on us, What life exists to keep our souls in his favour ? And the naked clay left like a crying heart to rot, In Jesus we pray, our true love and our saviour. But Man's tyranny and greed will not concede, To peasants whom toil this earth's rich soil, As no man is a man, for mocking his beliefs, Yet the rich in heart lie buried by man's spoils. "If we let you die unaided it would be to our shame, If we let you suffer as we have, we are just the same, For no man is more equal in colour or in creed, As mans riches lay in his heart deep within his name". If all Gods armies should strike your hearts and minds, And fill them with the richness of human kindness, Would your hearts bleed for the wrongs you have done Or would you in shame shrivel in stupidity and blindness ? If we make it to the new world, I will love you even more, And I will sing to my memory at my own American wake, But I will leave my heart buried under the soil of inishfree, And return I shall a freeman, and men of them I will make. If to distant shores our celtic hearts should go, And the forty shades of green to idle roam, I shall keep sacred this day my tricolour heart, And wherever i am I will always call Ireland home. Footnote: And yet after more than a century and a half of suffering I see men without arms dying from needless starvation, Penned in like animals stripped of humanity, and worth, And in years to come we will still pray for mans' salvation.
