Anchorites And Hermits
Within the shaded dust accumulated annals Layers of times past And cobwebbed dim cold halls of a history Not always hide their secrets and mystery As the echos of the past still resound That haunts the minds of those who search And it is found evidence in faded tattered documents And writings that unfold before their eyes Often very cruel and gruesome harsh punishment Was dealt out time and after time And death by execution for trivial Smallest crimes This is an example of man's inhumane Unconsevible cruelty and dark side Of wicked men who cause so much unholy misery Horrendous suffering and pain It is known that the church Did some horrible things But just imagine if you were imprisoned As a child to spend your life behind a bricked-up wall Be one of the most evil acts and practices That man has ever conceived And still hard to believe Every country has a dark past As had old medieval England France and Germany The church would choose a child or the child would volunteer A boy or usually a girl both very Young To dwell and live imprisoned behind a bricked-up wall With not much light and cold And through a small hole that had been made and done It's purpose was to read the gospel to visitors Or whoever should pass by at the time The practice of becoming an Anchorite Was considered a privilege And praiseworthy and not a crime I wonder how many If any Saw the sun again feeling its warmth Upon their face And breathed in fresh air Free and happy To love and live again And rejoin the human race
