Clear View-Mixed
2 "If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?" Rumi's quote With concern for a very close friend, I looked him into his eyes and said, "We must see and hear the truth about ourselves in the most objective manner". His reply to me was, "What does that mean?" Fortunately, there was a mirror in the room. I invited him to walk to the mirror with me. As we both looked into the mirror, it was clear that it was not giving a true reflection of us, because the mirror needed to be polished. He then said to me, "I get irritated over the sound of a mirror being rubbed". I then replied, "If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?" I continued. "Looking for a clear view in an unpolished mirror is tantamount to looking through your rearview mirror. Similarly, and more importantly, how do we objectively confront our true beings? And what will become of us if we never allow others, friend or foe, to inform us of what we look like through their eyes?" My friend stood speechless.
