MILTON CREEK NEWS
Sheriff Koplin has ridden East to gather a few other folks who decided to leave the city and head West, hoping to settle in Milton Creek. I'm sure whoever they are will be good people and will be made as welcome as the Bakers were. I hear tell there's going to be a school teacher, another deputy (can't have too many of those with all the hombre's who are up to no good in these parts. I heard Mayor Tom say the new circuit judge is coming with the Sheriff, too. Here is what I know so far about what The Bakery will have to offer. Of course, the menu will be adjusted based on whether the new herd of milk cows arrive soon and how much milk they produce, so be patient. Having journeyed from their home state of Texas, the Bakers arrived in Milton Creek bringing with them recipes for their favorite Texas desserts. Sara told me about some of the tempting treats they'll be filling the shelves with very soon. Here is what she shared with me... Sara: Texas Pecan (pronounced 'pee-can') Pie--It’s like your average pecan pie, but bigger (well, taller). And it’s award-winning, took 1st place at the county fair. So, you know this pie is good. Our pecan pie has a deliciously thin, flaky, and golden crust. It’s almost surprising it can hold the weight of the filling and piles of pecans! Cowboy Cookies--For city slickers, it’s hard to appreciate the physical labor a cowboy does every day. Cowboys require lots of calories, and they get hungry. Enter cowboy cookies. It’s said that this delicious treat started as a sort of energy bar for the trails. Whether that’s true or not, we don’t know. What we do know is that cowboy cookies are filling and scrumptious. Cowboy cookies are essentially oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. They’re crispy on the edges and perfectly chewy inside. They’re buttery, chocolatey, and irresistibly delicious. Texas Peach Dumplings Our Texas Peach Dumplings feature a crust made from biscuits or dumplings, like an upside-down pie. Texas Peach Dumplings are more like a peach cake. Rather than biscuit dough, the peaches are covered in a buttermilk batter. This batter is thin, so it works its way down between the peach slices. The result is a tender, moist, cake-like cobbler with slices of peach in every bite. This cobbler is also loaded with butter, so it’s seriously indulgent. Sopapillas Sometimes called Mexican doughnuts, this Tex-Mex treat is one of our favorites. Sopapillas are puffy little fried bites of happiness. They’re reminiscent of beignets but a little smaller and easier to make. Our favorite part is the toppings. We love to douse them in honey and cinnamon, but you do you! Texas Sheet Cake Simple. Chocolatey. Delicious. This cake is great because it requires minimal effort, but it always tastes amazing. It’s a soft chocolate cake with chocolate icing. It’s rich and buttery. Plus, it’s big, like feed-the-whole-state-of-Texas big! So, it’s perfect for entertaining, taking to a Sunday social, or bringin’ to the Saturday night square dance. Bill is the ‘caller’, so get ready for some boot scootin’ come Saturday night. Do-Si-Do! ******************************************* They will also be baking fresh loaf bread, honey biscuits, and jalapeno cornbread. I know everyone in Milton Creek is familiar with Tania's delicious Whiskey Whoopie Pies. Don't even think about asking for her recipe! It's a secret that she guards with a weapon! I'll also be adding a couple of things that the Bakers have agreed to include. Creole Cinnamon Buns and New Orleans Bread Pudding with a buttery whiskey sauce. One thing Milton Creek is never short of is whiskey... thanks to Jan for keeping the Manx in stock.
