Closing time
Travelled through the night to see my wife at home, Didn’t realise I’d be all alone. I walked through the door with a tear in my eye, As I read that letter that said goodbye. Next to the letter was that bottle of gin, Drank half empty just to drown that sin. Picked up the bottle smashed against the wall, As I fell to the floor in the cold dark hall. Its closing time now at the bar, That glass just poured is now empty, I’ll drink away the sorrows with a good old friend, And remind myself that it’s not the end. I cried through the night with that glass in my hand, Listened to the music of my favourite band. But nothing seemed to put my mind to rest, I needed for myself to do what’s best. I took my glass with a bottle of wine, Watched the clocks hands and the time go by. Stumbled through the door and on that old long road, cried out her name and then to god I showed. Its closing time now at the bar, That glass just poured is now empty, I’ll drink away the sorrows with a good old friend, And remind myself that it’s not the end. Called my daddy and he saved my life, I told him how I’d just lost my wife. Nothing seemed to matter with that whisky in hand, How she’d broken me down to a beaten man.
