The Compliment by Max Burchett
by Max Burchett Lots of flattery and L.A. handshakes given, But once upon a time, actually just last year, A seemingly casual compliment was for me heaven, One I will always remember. Though I kept it to myself, Not sure the reason for that, Yet sometimes I think about it. A great man said to an audience, some I knew, “If I were in a battle, I would want Max and his brother In the foxhole with me.” Although perhaps better said about another. Yet, when I think it might be better To give it up, just let it be, Then I remember, January to December, That comment about me. Maybe it is that saying about woman and man, I am what I think Others think I am. If that is what someone Of his stature thinks of me, That is what I must be, Rather, I must somehow make it be.
