Raindrop Musings
I sit at my desk, my mind rambling. I pause, watching the rain as it creates a beat upon the sidewalk. People pass as if in accelerated motion, fearing they’ll get wet. “How odd,” my thoughts continue rambling. “Why do we willingly step in the shower and get soaking wet but dislike fresh raindrops falling upon us? Are we afraid we’ll melt?” The rain joined my rambling with its soothing pitter patter. I opened my windows wide. “Don’t you just love the smell of fresh rain?” Raindrops float in gentle waves, wind-freed from gravity. They are the soft music from the earth, a sweet beckoning serenade. Each drop bequeaths itself unto the cooling air - wet lifeboats in a dry sea. I focus on individual raindrops noticing that each one is the same, but together they sing of treasured memories, of comforting love from those who’ve passed and of the hopes I hold for the future. I love the rain almost more than cherished photographs, for each one is a perfect moment. Each one joins millions of others, cascading from a confident sky. It is the sort of weather that washes everything anew, bringing deep puddles into which children splash. Maybe I could build a paper boat, step outside sans my umbrella, cast my boat into the gushing water along the curb, and watch it race down the street. “Wouldn’t that be fun?” I watch the raindrops collecting in our front yard and tree beds. Together the raindrops bring a richness to each hue, the browns deepen in a way that soothes my heart, bringing a steadiness to my soul. The grass glistens, reflecting the light, a new bright shine to their wands, softly waving in the breeze. Let the rain come, for I am safe, warm, and dry inside my home. Let it come with its serenade on the roof and steady drumming on the windows. From this cozy place I watch it enrich the sweet brown soils and make glossy every leaf. It is the liquid goodness that goes to the roots and refreshes the world. It is the liquid gold that inspires my creativity. quiet afternoon drops of rain against window nature’s music heard raindrops on the roof my heart pitter-pattering memories tapping
