And, If This Was the Last Time
And, if it was the last time… When do we ever think it will be, The last smile, the last touch, the last kiss The last time we whisper in an ear, The last time we smile into another’s eyes, The last time we reach out to reassure, The last time this love will be seen or heard, The last time two hearts, two souls, unite! When do we ever think it will come to an end… All that gentle, all that tender – the feelings The ones that touch us with grace and acceptance, The feelings that mean we’re ever so blessed By the love of a heart, the light of a spirit, the wonder Uncovered by the one who knows this hope That comes from real love, love that is so much… A part of us, such a big part of us… When do we ever think it will end… That kind word, gentle tug on the heart, The music, the rhythm, the poetry… Found inside the soul of someone we love, Someone we know as friend, family or heartfelt Light, so very bright – such a beautiful light, Surviving the darkest of night! When do we ever think it will be – The last breathe, the last smile, the last hint Promising to delight, inspire, invite… Gentle hopes and dreams, contentment, All the music that comes from believing, All the joy that frees the heart from fear, All the laughter that silences the tear, All the songs who make a heart feel! When do we ever imagine it will be the last time… Dewlike dreams sway a heart to believe, Aching thoughts embrace a soul with relief, Wonders so stirring capture the greatest peace, Soothing smiles caress away the worst doubts? If this was the last dream, the last smile, the last joy If this was the last light, the last hope, the last light If this was the last grace, the last kiss, the last sigh If this was the last time a poem would survive… The nouns, the verbs – so many words… reminders That, inside a soul, there lives a verse who aspires To write out the moments so the last time, the last – It survives the past, yesterday’s – the last, Yes, the last… poem shall be truly blessed by a gentle Caress from the hand who touches it with a pen Brought to life by the tenderness, the remembrance – If this was the last time I could tell my trembling truths I’d tell, in each word, the story of God’s beauty, The wonder of God’s kindness – the miracle of this God, Who silences every loneliness, writes the hope, faith and love… Into the eternity, where I know I’ll meet this God, Whose created every joy in life, the God whose been more Than light – He’s been the answer to my every doubt, The sweetness in each grace I’ve felt, the beautiful that reveals What it means to love without conditions… If this was the last time I could say it – I’d say “I Praise HIM – This GOD… who saved me!”
