Sister
for Judy, who stole my heart before I could part with my fears “Is solace anywhere more comforting than that in the arms of a sister?”—Alice Walker. Not my sister, yet it felt Like she was my sister, more than just my Aunt, my supporter – my confidant Ten years older than me, Not to the day, but to the month She was a December baby And I was born in late November Winter’s rising, poking fun At those gold and amber leaves Lying, twisted topsy turvy Over the earth, surrounded by Overcast skies and naked trees Who were quite shy - With their bare branches - bottoms shining Delighted, emphasizing Winter’s talent for coloring the soul Harshly, like a long stroll through fanciful Shores, beaches alive with the wind Silencing even the tenderest waves, the Soothing, savoring the thoughts who pour Over the spirit, humming in sing-song Voices capable of coloring the whole heart In hues of light, softness reflecting Inside the moment, a memory floating On the edges of her razor sharp mind, a mind Alive with exertion, drudging into the august Whimsy, dreading November’s dark And, then – in December, the creamy layers Of yesterday flowing on rivers of grace, Promising her that, yes, there would be Moments when she would not understand The way her niece, like a sister – fell back In her shadows, letting her lead Like there had been a plan instead of just The realization that she was stronger, More capable, stable – like the ancient wisdom Displayed on the thoughts of those Who believe in God who created everyone, The God who created even the dark – Just so He’d be able to show the whole world What it feels like to relish the moonlight, The starry skies glistening in grace, Soothing away the murky presence of night, When even the soul feels shy, Feeling like her prayers were more heard – More heeded by the One who promised His love would never let us leave the grace That blends our faith with forever, Meaning, someday – when the time is right, She and I, my sister impression – the sense Of sister who I never had, yet craved… She will be there with me, in the light Staring, awestruck… into the eyes of life, The light of life, the cry of life… In His eyes… is the reflection of you and I, When we quietly accept the hand Who was nailed to the cross that should Have been ours, the cross that decided To make the difference in our destiny, Forever – she and I, you and me… Will abide on the other side, with the life Who is the only reason we can claim To know the meaning of love that never dies!
