Graveyard
Graveyard Everyday on the way to my way to my clinic, I cross a huge graveyard, supposed to be the biggest one in Long Island. A Christian graveyard. Thousands are resting peacefully in these graves. All perfectly lined, surrounded by manicured grass. I don't know who lies there, and I am sure each one of them has a great story to tell, of family and friends, of laughter and tears, of toil and success, and even of great failures, of riches lost and gained. They are all there, the rich and the poor, the general and the common soldier, some of them dating back to the American Civil War. I do not know how it started, it just happened spontaneously a few years ago. I started praying for them on my way to clinic and back from the clinic. A simple non traditional prayer for their souls. It was just a small prayer, nothing more. I do not know anyone of them and they will never know me. They do not belong to my race or religion or country. I just prayed. Over the years, I don't know whether my prayers have brought them any good, but slowly and silently, it brought about a sense of peace to my own soul. It made me belong to entirely humanity. It appeared as if I had broken all the barriers of race, caste, religion, and nationality, and made me one with the entire Universe. I feel when we do some good, even like a simple thing as a "smile" or a "prayer", for some one whom we don't know, and who probably will never know us, we become a part of the entire Universe. When we help another human being, plant a tree or take care of animals, adopt a pet, without expecting anything in return, we are the Universe, for Universe is "love". Universe is a God’s act of love. - Dr Fazal Faroqui
