Race the Wind
I rode my steed to race the wind, tracking the setting sun His spirit was true and his soul knew too, his heart and mine were one His dusty hide and flashing feet cut the grass in evening haste Encouraging fingers caress his neck as spurs quickened his pace We raced the wind and set our coarse across the great divide The horse had spirit and loved to run But the wind had the longer stride. The wind laughed his howling moan to mock and beckon us on He rules the land from lofty peeks that guard his mountain throne Out to the west the lightning flashed within a purple sky Thunder rolled and beat its drum as the horse and I flashed by The sun gave up to twilight and the wind’s sting was lost The steed’s great heart was shattered, leaving me to count the cost
