Not His People, Part I
When Enrique came too, his head aching, and his memory scrambled royally, he found himself firmly tied to a chair, his eyes were bleary, it was hard to see. Something…a man, was standing before him, who this person might be, he didn’t know, last he remembered he was on patrol, but he could tell that was hours ago, Since he had been walking near the border, looking for people in the dead of knight, now he was in some adobe building, blinking back the harsh glare of morning light. How he’d ended up here, he couldn’t say, but he figured it must be Mexico, who else would tie up a border agent, and risk all the trouble that would soon flow? It had to be someone from a cartel, but which one? He had not the slightest clue, only seeing now a short, swarthy man who was more and more coming into view. “I see you’re awake,”he said in Spanish, “That is good, we have much to talk about. My bosses say you disrupt their convoys, they’re been watching you, and there is no doubt. “They invest much cash in taking folks north, and don’t like traitors disrupting their beat. Those women you’ve saved would pay off their debt working for our men, walking on the street. “All the product that you’ve intercepted comes out to much more than a small amount, so you’ll be telling me your patrol routes, it will go better if your just speak now.” The mean revealed a set of surgeon’s knives, then smiled with a malevolent joy, Enrique knew how cartels tortured folks, that to this man he was just a new toy. “Go to hell,”he muttered at the cruel man, the killer just rolled his eyes, loudly sighed, “Don’t think you’re achieving anything great, no need to draw out the pain as you die. “Besides, it is the least that you could do, after betraying your people this way, working for the gringos to deny land that was stolen from us back in the day. “You should be trying to help your own kind, to your culture you should have loyalty.” Rico just spat, “Culture must bow to choice, man has the right to chose what he must be.” The killer laughed loudly, and shook his head, said,”You’ve bought all the American bull. That’s nonsense they say to make you obey, even you must know they’re not your people. “Lie to yourself, it will do you no good, they just look down on you, this you must know.” He moved to speak again, but then there came the sound of gunshots from the floor below...
