The Nicest Wound
I shut my eyes and shaved my head Believed I should be left for dead The flickering light was overhead I pretended not to see I came to you in dated rags A fashion lack, no right to brag You picked me off just like a scab The wound that left me free And that’s the nicest wound That I’ve ever had Sometimes, I find, the deepest wounds Turn out not so bad There I was in a body sling The nurses brought me everything By day, I heard the bluebirds sing I wanted to go with them So many soaked seats on which I’ve sat So little hair under my hat Insurance doesn’t cover any of that Not if you’re not the victim –Some of the nicest wounds I’ve ever had Sometimes, the very deepest wounds Turn out not so bad So every bomb must have its day And for a moment, hold some sway Well, I’ll go off in a different way Your touch has seen to this ‘cause something died soon as something lived And deep inside, I can forgive The stone of truth which is all there is Let it grind me into bliss And that’s the nicest wound That I’ll ever have Sometimes, the very deepest wounds Turn out not to be bad.
