Vigil 1
Slowly I am awakened to the echoing sound of dripping into standing water within the confines of the cave.Water oozing through a miniscule aperture after last night's rain or condensation making its way down a stalagtite. I can see through the opening to the east that the sun is coming to life. The sullen nights sky of faded cobalt a backdrop to the emerging pinks and pale yellows announcing another day. Been living here for week and a half now arriving at dusk ten days ago.I set to work this morning frying strips of bacon atop a large coffee can turned makeshift stove.Feeding twigs gathered from around the caves entrance into the fire the aroma that ensues takes me back.Back to childhood. Being awakened by the smell of my mom frying bacon in the kitchen.Best alarm ever. Reheating lasts nights coffee I contemplate the day. As I drink I wonder how loved ones are doing in their own places of refuge.I send up a prayer of thanks as the warmth of sunrise helps to somewhat Chase the damp and chill of my own.Last night's rain making me especially grateful for its bashful appearance. Feeling determined to embrace life though fighting the urge to escape in sleep in response to those no longer having that option.I am grateful to be alive and to not know as yet the full scale of the devastation. After seeing no communication possible left to a prearranged location. May your feet be swift and sure.Though worry has began to gnaw. Please be o.k. Please. Today I will work at secreting the caves entrance.I will use some pine boughs to cushion my sleeping bag from the musty dirt of the caves floor.I will fight to remain human. To adorn, embelish,to reflect on all that has been or will be.I will prepare for your arrival. I am alone here except for the presence of the ONE who has promised not to leave the side of those who want him near. God's warmth my only comfort and strength . Confused and bewildered my first night here a groundhog wandering by stopped and lay down by the fire I had built at the portal to this world I now inhabit. Though not exceedingly comfortable with The wild he and I slept companionably through the night. In the morning I woke to find he had moved on.Perhaps to accompany another on their journey. Closing for now as much to do.I am going to check out the area and see what can be of use.Hope You and all whom you love are doing as best as our current reality allows. Will keep you in my prayers as I pray we will be in yours. Soon, bye.
