Unlikely Senior Citizen
When did it happen? I’m thinking It must have been when I was sleeping I changed from young and restless To the elderly, wrinkled, graying - old-fashioned When did I first notice the way it hurt To jump and play, feel my heartbeat pulsate Know the meaning of mature – senior Citizen who has lost teeth and whose vision Is no longer 20/20, but falls somewhere Between seeing clearly and seeing blurry Images who remind me that I’m not 20 In any way, shape or form – not even When pretending I can still do everything I did way back when my heart was flooded With dreams and whims, little metaphors Lost between the hues of an impulsive act And the notion that youth would always last When did it happen? I can’t remember It seems most things are barely remembered These days, I fight with my reflection who knows It couldn’t be me in the mirror, where it shows That I’ve changed – I’m different, transformed From the young and bold to the ripe and old When did it happen? I still don’t know how To write it all down, the mystery, the clouds Shadows of secret thoughts, obscurity, doubt Struggling to find out just what happened To the heart who was just beginning to find The answers, the solutions, the responses Only to realize that time has gone and decided… It’s autumn and its time for gentle hearts to decide Just how it will be when they’re flying free Peaceful as the winds who silence their doubts Pour joy into their spirits who reflect all the wisdom Found inside the one who knows old age, yes… It is more than just a number – it is the promise Securing the spirit in eternity, where there is love Forever and ever – endless treasure brought to life By the One who knows that old age is more than a number It begets the moment in time when God tells you why Your life has been given – Why you have been living So, with grace… embrace the sagacity of old age… Knowing that, despite gray hair and wrinkles that taunt There is the assurance that God doesn’t see your appearance So much as He sees your tenderness, your experiences Your gifts of love – the gifts you were blessed to give Because He knows that those gifts are the ones that show Your heart, your soul, your spirit – Your willingness To give back to Him – the part of yourself that He roused Within – when He promised to never leave you friendless Old or young, He is forever there – awaiting the moment When your prayer reaches out, beseeches Him to listen In spite of your struggles with being this unlikely senior citizen!
