A song of Innocence at the Grand Canyon
A song of innocence at the Grand Canyon A fierce spring storm Rolling counter-clockwise Over the heights of the Rockies Flows into the forest Stirred to music by Boreas Windy god of frost and cold The trees sway Ponderosas bowing Glittering pine tree needles dancing Tree limbs madly keeping time An invisible river of air flowing Its winds scouring the Colorado Plateau Twin cascades of sound The breeze, and then the trees follow Walking on the trail in the forest Above the canyon, I see Sheltered below the dancing pines Three Mule deer Our eyes span the air and meet At a safe distance Proud brown eyes survival sync-ed A deer neck joins the windy chorus A suave chord reaching down to nibble Eyes cast away from this intruder, yet The subtle ears follow me, knowing This is a commons, A refuge Its carbon and Oxygen shared by decree A lofty shaded Cushioned Eden National Park Cease-fire zone Across the glowing canyon Land flows south into desert Lofty mountains rise above the plain Home of Navajo and Hopi spirits The wind curving over these summits And beyond them From my perch. I see Long sightlines They allow some insight to that distance My innocence is not lasting Thinking of immigrants As I imagine a southern terrain Of Cholla and mesquite Where hate and fear has raised A xenophobic steely curtain Threaded with the technology of violence Faces etched with adrenalin Holding a plastic water bottle lifeline Crouched below Peering through the mesh Below the singing pines Another wind gust trembles the trees As I turn my face toward the north And walk away from the canyon’s rim Freedom enables my stride Innocence begins ringing again in my ears Safe in this lofty shaded Cushioned Edenic refuge National Park pastoral, a sheltered Cease-fire zone
