How Will I Know When To Leave
How will I know when to leave? I asked my mother. “You’ll know,” she told me. I was going to visit my father on an Alzheimer’s unit. I had not seen him since his diagnosis. He was playing cards with two other residents when I arrived. “Hi Dad!” I said. He looked up. There was a quizzical look on his face. He knew me …………………..maybe. The woman next to him jumped up. Ran off screaming; she thought she was his new wife. “It is okay,” Mother told my sister, when they visited. When Dad confided, “I almost got married last night.” My sister was horrified. Mom said this to her in the car. “He has to take any little pleasure he can get. If thinking he is married helps, then great.” Dad’s friend at the card table was Bob. Bob asked “Are you cold, Dick?” Not once, but about sixteen times. Dad finally asked “What?” Bob said “Are you cold, Dick? I will get you a sweater.” Bob wandered off for about forty minutes. When he returned he was carrying a candy bar. It was a beautiful day. I kept asking Dad if he wanted to go outside. Let’s go home, he said, over and over and over. This broke my heart. I wanted to take him home But Mom can no longer control him. I do not think that Dad knew me. There were glimpses of humor in his eyes, but even they were gone after an hour or two. I knew it was time to go. For he had already left.
