Rural Nights
I cannot say who the teachers were, but we were taught to be afraid of the dark. The dark had no eyes, no voices, and no ears. Yet, it managed to fill us with fears and tears. For my ears, the FROGS were short on melody, and at times, they were simply annoying and noisy. There were bugs of the night, but we were not 'bugged' by them. We were intrigued by the LIGHTENING BUGS that provided lots of play time. I grew up in the rural south, and there were plenty country creatures of the night. The CRIKETS were the 'soothing creatures'. Deep into the night, we slept tight by their 'night sounds'. MOSQUITOS were creatures of the night as well as the day. Being very clear about their mission, they came for blood. They had neither light nor song and never came to play. Beyond any doubt, of the four, mosquitos were most unwelcomed. 060522PS, Creatures of the Night, Julia Ward
