Work In Progress 9
Now I probably would have stayed out if I had not known for a fact that LaDonna Poirret had been allowed entrance and she had never hand washed his dirty socks before a game and ironed them dry as had I his forgotten pal.I never saw LaDonna carrying in coal which was his job not mine.I didn't truly grasp the whole LaDonna thing till I perused the playboys. He was obviously sex crazed. He and my brother Dallen had to be broken apart with a broom stick by mom as they fought over who in truth was LaDonna's boyfriend right there in the back yard flanked on both sides by rows of Easter lillies. It was an epidemic and miss LaDonna was the contagion. Then that punk Danny Basey hit town.He was the kid my brother was with when he got into mischief.Old LaDonna loved herself a bad boy. So I am up there reading that trash and the light is growing too dim to see. Then I remember my brothers used to make torches out of cat tails down by the river. As these reeds not available I decided to improvise.I took a stick, wrapped it tightly with a rag, then dipped it in the gas tank of the lawn mower.Got some matches in kitchen and took my makeshift torch to clubhouse to light.I had no idea as to the flamability of gas.It went whooom!I dropped the stick on the Quilt which caught fire and had to be beaten out.Whew! That was a close one. Later that night playing hide and seek we noticed the air had a Smokey haze. Then looking up to the clubhouse I saw it was lit up.Hmmmm Raymonds home I'll go ask him what's with the smoke. As I got to the top Of The ladder I see the floor of he old clubhouse is on fire, directly over the only car we own.Hollering instructions I begin a fire brigade as we don't own a hose.Using soup pots I have little sisters filling as I c!imb the ladder and throw water into the flames.THE WHOLE TIME REMEMBERING a Warning from my mom.If this dump ever catches fire and I find out one of you kids calls the fire department,it will be hell to pay. Finally a neighbor catches on about the time my dad comes walking out in his boxer shorts asking ,what's going on? Earlier about the fourth a neighbor Kid threw a fire cracker in the back window cause he couldn't be in the club either.I dutifully reported this to the clubhouse president who was really taking some heat from the old man.Verbally as he would no longer tolerate the other kind.He went out and punched the kid(Rusby Rudloff for the record)in the nose. Mom was so sad about the outcome .So so close.Nosy neighbor. Later
