Dan the Hero, Part Iii
...It was amidst the aftermath of this that Tanya first saw the man in the flesh, he was half-blackened by the soot and smoke, so taxed that even he struggled for breath. People were circling around the man, the cops treated him like one of their own, brought him water, dispatched out the patients, Dan could hear their every whimper and groan. Tanya knew folks here wouldn’t like her much, but it was the job, so forward she went, Dan saw her coming, and just rolled his eyes, somebody from the press was always sent. “Is there something that I can help you with?” He growled as Tanya strutted up close, she heard his disdain, but ignored it all, as she always did when such thing arose. “I’m Tanya Trace, and I’m wondering if I can talk to you, about what you do?” Dan just laughed, said, “I remember, when young, believed that your kind cared only for truth.” She smirked and said, “You can think what you want, but can I ask you to comment right now about why you’re here, instead of up north, where Flight two-seven-zero-three just went down?” He leapt to his feet, and pulled out his phone, scanning quickly until her found the news, saw the truth of it, and then heard her say, “The people want to know, how do you choose? “There were two hundred souls on that plane, yet you only rescued forty right here? What makes you decide who gets to go home? Who gets to suffer and who gets to cheer?” Anger came to his eyes, when he looked up, then cooled once seeing the bait she had left, he sighed and said, “I didn’t know of them. and no person can save mankind from death.” The woman’s eyes widened, and she snapped out, “Do you think that’s good enough ‘hero-man?’ What makes you think that you can just play God, and decide who of us is saved or damned?” He gave her a look that was pure disgust, and for a minute she feared he might snap, but then, once again, his eyes became cool, the man had much too much control for that. He said, “I’m not God, He’s far beyond me, and decides upon death for all our lives.” Tanya just smirked. “Was that from Sunday School? I don’t think our readers will buy that line. “They want to know why they keep doing this, when it’s clear even you can’t save us all? why you’re praised for being mankind’s great gift, when even you can’t save us from a fall? “They want to know why you still flit about, doing these childish heroic games? And why we should all just look up to you, when there remains so much trauma and pain?” CONTINUE IN PART IV
