Still the Same
As I pull into the parking lot and turn the motor off the sun is hidden by the clouds. The rain has finally stopped A bit of light spits tiny rainbows from tips of the pines The old school hasn't changed much, since my children walked the halls... As if time has been erased. The old brick walls remain..... Ghosts of the past are here to greet me, and I'm overcome by waves of grief, for the days we have lost Skinned knees on the playground, and stuck wads of gum under desks All those years that seem like yesterday, now are photos from the past I stop at the office, then wander down familiar trails Reminded of the teachers, who once had taught my child Those who have since retired,... Mr. Spencer, Mrs. Schueller, Miss Wilson, Mr. Chew I wonder where they are now, and who could fill their shoes I peek into the second grade classroom And my I see my grandson working diligently He looks up and sees me with a grin so wide And soon a whisper scurries about the room. Ten more faces are soon grinning at me. But just then, the bell rings, and one happy little boy Gathers his coat, and papers, and comes to me He grabs my hand, and we walk to the car. The clouds have disappeared.
