Safety
I asked you to lay yourself bare. Tell me your truths and I’ll make them mine. I just wanted to understand how you felt inside: Your mother is content with her life, Her smile carefree and bright. Your brother is innocent, Not a thought in his young mind. The man of your mother’s second marriage, Was the perfect husband and replacement father. You had it all. The picture perfect family. Although, only on paper. As a child your home is supposed to be your safe haven. Where you’re told that you can be anything you want. Protected, inside thick walls of encouragement and warmth. When the man of your mother’s second marriage came into your room One late night, He took away your home. Now not the actual brick and mortar. But your safety. I couldn’t understand how this man could take everything from you. Everything, from a child. What was it that made him like you so much? Your uneven smile? Your wobbly voice? Your still growing body? Regardless, just like that, He placed safety on the top of Mount Everest. Sleep at night, what you thought was your escape from reality, Was really no escape at all. As you closed your eyes you thought it would make everything go away But the pain never strayed “Affection became appalling” you tell me in your eyes. You say “it’s your fault and not mine” But it’s not your fault, it is his. He’s gone I tell you, locked away, But that won’t make your pain go away. If he is the one in captivity, Why are you still confined?
