Still-Thankful For
Two-thousand twenty-one, scratching my head. Let’s back up all the way up to January. Mom and Dad working consistently to beat the ovarian cancer-monster. Still the clink of anniversary cheers sixty-one years…woot…woot. Thankful for that stellar moment!!! February, the time of discuss. My parents know they are old. But they grin, having taken such good care of themselves and one another. Thankful for the phone calls…mama hugs. March, we’re still good. Mom’s handling her burden like a pro. She rings the bell, as she retells it, “real hard,” to do away with chemotherapy. Dad neverminded the intense care his wife needed. Thankful Dad had this time, for he wouldn’t believe the tears that would fall like a waterfall when mama died in April. Thankful Dad is here Thankful for each tear that lets us know he loved her so. Thankful for so many years. Thankful for the chain of I love you’s from Mom. The fog of May, London couldn’t look as gray. I’m thankful for my church…eyewitness to my cup of mourning for later, six months later they would see my joy return. June…July…August, sitting quite a bit with Dad, his sadness, loneliness, anger Thankful for getting to know Dad more. Thankful for the stories he tells. September is somber. Birthdays within days of each other. My dad climbs inside his own mind to hide, this can’t be true. Thankful for…thankful for… Thankful to get beyond the sadness, as October comes…birthday without mom but I’m okay but dad is sad. I ring my nephew…no answer, his birthday on the 9th. We practically shared our days. there were problems heading south. Phone rings…that awful ring. he’s gone North to be with mom. Thankful that he gave his life to God. Thankful for the time we had. It’s been a tough year…not much cheer November is adrift A funeral…broken ribs, not mine…surgery, not mine. Flu, not mine. Thankful for whatever meal this brings, we have too much, have to help my sister get the turkey on. December, around the corner, flying to a much colder climate. Thankful for warm hearts of family! Thankful for all you poets too, many have become good friends. Thankful for one true God! Thankful for hope that our Savior brings. Thankful in December we celebrate…we celebrate O the celebration in heaven will be worth the wait when tears are wiped away by the wounded hand of God. 11/23/2021
