My Veteran Friend
I have a friend who is a veteran. He served our country during the Korean war and is one great American. Murrey turned 88 this pasted June; and I attended a birthday dinner in his honor. He has had a life that lights up the night. For 50 years and more, he has championed the cause of the unborn and given his life to aid babies in the womb. I have never met one more devoted to this cause. Divorced many years ago, he has lived alone, but never has he lost the sense of where he belongs. Living alone in a studio apartment, his days are radically different from just a year ago. He no longer drives, and someone helps him shop for groceries. Murrey has lots of friends who care for him, and he is not alone. Presently, his one room studio is unlike any place he has lived before. He has a family who deeply cares that lives in another state, and they are very much involved with him. When I call him on the phone or pay him a visit, he never ceases to have lots of things to say. He speaks of people who visit him rather frequently. I listen to him talking about his visitors for a while, and then I change the subject to some of the things we use to talk and debate about. He has no fear of them; and he and I realize that they are not real to anyone but himself. I soon learn that his mind isn't what it used to be, and it makes me sad. Only heaven can record the lives he contributed in saving during the Korean war. And for that effort, we are deeply appreciative. I once asked him how many babies he has saved in his 'Right To Life' efforts. I do not remember the exact number, but it was remarkable. I only wish that I had documented the number, because now, his memory is fading. Nevertheless, the cause he championed will never fade. Murrey answered the call of duty to his country and also to the innocent and silent cries of the unborn. He has bravely fought in these two wars, and for during so, I am grateful for his service and honored to know him as a friend who refused to be silenced. 102521PS
