Sufficiency
I crouched at the edge of the narrow rivulet Watching the tiny critters furtively forage Among the damp driftwood and shiny stones, Some surely glancing up and seeing my face May have thought me their god, amazingly, Or simply curious about life at a simple stage Like humans might wonder if God watches From some faraway star blinking back tears, They thought nothing of me staring at them At all. But I am sure they knew I was there, Looking down into their most primitive world Which, containing everything they needed For survival, was sufficient for their wellbeing, And thinking, as they did, their world sublime Perhaps with basic creek babbling sounds they Uttered a word of praise and thanksgiving That, as I crouched, I did not scoop them into The palm of my hand and quickly bring them To an exotic paradise hence to suffer and die, So, I bid farewell, arose, and walked away. written October 23, 2021
