People of the Horse
Came from the North displaced by the cold winters, They migrated to America these creatures Natives saw the horse differently from the Spanish As a gift to their People Respected godlike before the Spanish came Not quite the story told by the old school books, The People connected and saw the horse and their magic Between the People and their Brothers the horse They saw the bond and formed it before others came With their horses of Arabian and Andalusian blood Ones the Spanish might eat because of their hunger During their many long wars not the People Natives respected these creatures majestic and strong They swam across the rivers, with the People on their backs Fought battles and carried tipis across the land The People of the Horse knew the magic of these creatures Who bonded with the tribes and Natives so quickly For they knew too the People were their brothers And life became better, easier and good Creatures Godlike cherished and respected As they fed on the sacred lands grazed on the grasses The grasses that became stronger From the horses who were free to roam A gift from the Creator -- the horses to the People
