I Remember a Time
I REMEMBER A TIME I remember a Christmas time when there was no money spare My Dad and Mam; made us both toys to show how they cared My brother got a wooden fort, and I got a wooden dolls house Both made with love and care, nothing in the detail missed out Cosy times spent making Christmas decorations was much joy Both waiting in anticipation; to receive our own homemade toy Dad got a piece of thin wood, Mom painted on it a Ludo board Shaking the dice like mad in a little cup, until double six scored Mom; made a Hansel and Gretel house, all covered in marzipan Each roof tile was made up separately; as using no house plan Making the door and windows then its own little chimney stack Though naughty me, did nick a tile later from the house’s back Amazing really; how my Mom could cook all from a wood stove As at the time we were as living in a real gypsy’s Burton Vardo Christmas was special that year there was nothing to compare I was eight years old, and can never forget that childhood year Indiana Shaw . . .
