Autumn is my favorite season. She carefully chooses the wedding day “before the ground was frozen.” Perhaps this relates to the groom-to-be as he would come back to her in one piece, though having dealt with the coldness of war. The woman plans their “wedding feast,” as her “freedom fighter struggled in the Mideast.” Especially poignant, today, with the news of Afghanistan falling into the hands of the Taliban! The third verse is my favorite. It is rich in imagery. I can hear the “lively” music in the colorful barn. Perhaps the barn has a new coat of red paint. “Magenta chrysanthemums” - what a beautiful bouquet! This woman plans with fervor her wedding day, showing great faith and hope and the foretelling of a happy marriage. The poem ends with a poignant note. The couple must celebrate their love, their freedom, all the colors of bliss, living for those who were not as fortunate. This poem was written 10 years ago. It is happy yet sad. What would dear Carolyn write today, I wonder. I feel blessed to pay tribute to a golden star poet! Rest in peace, Carolyn Autumn Wedding Dream The wedding they’d dreamed of was carefully chosen For brisk mid-autumn before the ground was frozen As her freedom fighter struggled in the Mideast She was absorbed in planning a fall wedding feast A lively country band in the red barn would play Magenta chrysanthemums would be her bouquet Though many of his comrades never made it home He returned to be wed ‘neath fall’s colorful dome Carolyn Devonshire © 2011 Andrea Dietrich’s Celebrating Carolyn's Poetry: An Uncontest
