Nothing Comes That Easy
I will have a house bigger than yours, the whippersnapper said to me. It will be grandiose, a mansion maybe, something much nicer. I thought it was interesting this was his reaction to seeing my new place. He was going to light the world of sales on fire, for sure. He had other goals too. Large goals – a tennis court, a swimming pool. He spoke of these goals often, leaning in his chair, while others worked. The rest of the team did their best to ignore his high-reaching goals. They kept thinking that he would soon reach for a phone, but he didn’t. He had a review and was horrified to discover he actually had to work. He had been paid a tiny salary, which he never felt was adequate. However, by now, he was supposed to have generated his own clients. He was angry and mean-spirited now, blaming co-workers for failures. He called his mother and asked her to come in and give us heck. She did, and we had her booted from the office after a bit of rumbling. He went home, because he got angry and threw something at the boss. Given an easy life by mommy, who used to back teachers down. I wanted to tell him that he was going to have to stand on his own. Actually do the work if someone else was willing to hire him. Six years later he was living with mommy and daddy, not working Sad he thought they could always save him. Nothing comes that easy.
