Summer Thanksgiving
Two bails of straw, an ornament, in my front yard last fall Held a couple scarecrows, hosting autumn flowers Pumpkins, gourds n' all Had outlived their purpose, for that harvest scene, So were moved to the backyard, where in early spring We dumped a bunch of soils into mix of straw And planted in potato's, then we waited, watching in awe As those little potato plants grew, our curiosity did too.. For empty holes where potatoes were growing Had fast appeared without us quite knowing Where were all those taters going? With holes in the straw bails, and nobody hoeing? Then we discovered the sneaky guy When one of our children just happened to spy Our Labrador Retriever ...who knew he should not... Seems he really digs the garden and potatoes... A LOT!! Scarecrows stood with twinkling eyes So they have no alibis And watched our precious doggy snatch Those taters from our garden patch Now I watch the brown sparrows ever enjoying They visit those straw bails busily employing Finding worms, bugs n' slugs that they love the best And taking home souvenir straw for their nests Now we've noted another marvel quite new A string snake has taken up residence there too! Those straw bail's harvest in the summer's heat Offers many a critter a fun yummy treat Two bails of straw, an ornament, For my yard last fall Harvests thanksgiving to the dog, birds, and all!
